5. The Battery
The Battery is named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side and the point, as is Castle Pinckney, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10), Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan’s Island. You can cross over to many of the bars and restaurants if you like. This place is great at sunrise or sunset for pictures to capture shrimp boats, pelicans, and marsh views.

Our favorite Charleston retreat is Sullivan’s Island, SC. This quiet little beach town is located just north of Downtown Charleston. It has a small strip of restaurants in the middle of the island to grab a quick bite to eat. Visit Fort Moultrie and Breach Inlet to brush up on your U.S. History while you are there.
